On Tuesday, Bob Lee, the founder of the tech company Cash App, was stabbed to death in San Francisco. The 43-year-old was discovered by police around 2.35 a.m. and rushed to a hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Lee’s current employer, MobileCoin, as well as his father, Rick Lee, both confirmed his death. The motive for the stabbing is unknown, and police have not released any information about potential suspects.

Bob Lee joined MobileCoin as a part-time advisor and early stage investor in February 2021. He was appointed chief product officer at the cryptocurrency firm in November of the same year. He brought years of experience from previous positions at various companies. Lee previously served as CEO of Present for six years before joining MobileCoin. Lee also worked as a Limited Partner at SV Angel and SignalFire.

He is best known as the creator of Cash App – Lee was the chief technology officer at digital payments company Square when it launched Cash App in 2013. Square Cash was the previous name for the mobile payment service.

Lee began his career as a web developer for Redrock Communications in 1997. Over the years, he worked with a number of well-known companies, including Capgemini, OCI, and AT&T. From 2004 to 2010, he worked as a staff software engineer at Google, which he left to become the CTO of Square.

‘Bob was fantastic.’

Since news of his death broke, tributes to the Cash App creator have flooded social media.

MobileCoin founder Joshua Goldbard remembered him as a man who made friends wherever he went. In a series of tweets, he praised Lee as a “artist” rather than just a techie.

“Bob was a genius. He had a kaleidoscopic mind. Pick a topic, and Bob will be right there with you, telling you all of the ways he has already thought about it. “It was a delight,” Goldbard wrote.

Bob Lee had been living with his father. In a Facebook post, he said of his son, “Bob would give you the shirt off his back.” He never looked down on anyone and followed a strict no-judgment philosophy. Bobby worked harder than anyone else and was the most intelligent person I had ever met. Everyone who knew him will miss him.”
