According to police, an employee at a bank in Louisville, Kentucky, opened fire and livestreamed the incident on Instagram, killing five people.

The victims ranged in age from 40 to 64. A rookie police officer who had only joined the department two weeks prior was one among the nine people hurt.

After brain surgery, the officer who was shot in the head is still in critical condition.

Within three minutes, police arrived and engaged the assailant with gunfire, killing him.

At around 8:30 local time, a gunshot occurred at the Old National Bank in the heart of the city. (12:30 GMT).

According to Caleb Goodlett, his wife, a bank employee, barricaded herself inside the vault as the attack started.

Other witnesses gave accounts of witnessing the gunfight between the police and the lone assailant.

Among the deaths, according to Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, was Tommy Elliot, a senior vice-president at the bank and a “incredible friend” of his.

Mr. Beshear added that Tommy Elliott “helped me build my legal career, helped me become governor, and gave me advice on being a good dad.”

What is known about the victims of the Kentucky bank shooting

Officer Nickolas Wilt, a 26-year-old from Louisville Metro, was the officer who was shot in the head.

Anthony Piagentini, a member of city council, revealed to the Courier-Journal that Mr. Wilt graduated from the academy on March 31 and that his brother is currently a student at the police academy.

Craig Greenberg, the mayor of Louisville, referred to the assault as “an evil act of targeted violence.” The mayor mentioned that he had recently been the target of a firearms attack.

He was shot at by a mentally ill individual who barged into his campaign office last year.

Two survivors told WHAS-TV that the bank’s conference room on the ground floor was where the initial gunfire on Monday started.

One man pointed to his clothing and stated, “Whoever was next to me got shot; blood is on me from it.”

Connor Sturgeon, 25, was identified as the culprit. According to authorities, Sturgeon streamed the shooting online while using an AR-15-style semi-automatic gun.

Police Chief Jacquelyn Gwinn-Villaroel said, “That’s tragic to know that incident was out there and captured.”

Owner of Instagram Meta said that the livestream of this sad incident from earlier this morning had been “quickly removed.”

The attacker is identified as an Old National Bank portfolio banker and syndications colleague in an online profile. After working there as an intern for three summers, he had started working there full-time last year.

He had no prior interactions with law enforcement, according to officials.

He allegedly wrote a statement outlining his plans for the mass shooting before reporting to work on Monday after receiving recent word from the bank that he would be fired.

According to data gathered by the Gun Violence Archive, there have been at least 146 mass shootings in 2023, or shootings in which at least four people were shot, with at least 15 of those incidents occurring since the beginning of April.

On Monday, President Joe Biden tweeted that Congress must enact gun control laws because “too many Americans are paying the price of inaction with their lives.”

Kentucky is one of 26 states that don’t require a permit for the majority of persons over 21 to buy and carry a gun.
