The post Day trip from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay appeared first on .

]]>

It’s simple to drive to the Uruguayan town of Colonia del Sacramento from Montevideo, and you can also take a day trip there by ferry from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Colonia, one of the oldest cities in Uruguay, was founded in 1680, and the UNESCO has designated its historic district as a World Heritage Site for its architecture and background.

A day journey from Argentina to Colonia is risk-free, simple, and affordable. In addition to taking advantage of this lovely town’s amenities, visiting Colonia also offers the novelty of visiting another nation or getting your visa renewed.

This travel guide will outline the best tours and boat companies to utilise, how to get to Colonia Del Sacramento from either Buenos Aires or Montevideo, and anything else you need to know before you go!

Colonia Del Sacramento: Where Is It?

On Uruguay’s southwest coast, bordering the Argentine city of Buenos Aires, is the settlement of Colonia Del Sacramento.

It is fewer than 50 nautical miles from Buenos Aires and 180 km by car from Uruguay’s capital of Montevideo.

How To Travel To Colonia Del Sacramento From Montevideo, Uruguay

You can take a vehicle, bus, or tour to travel to Colonia from Montevideo. It takes 2 to 3 hours to drive.

This route is serviced by numerous bus companies, and all of them have amenities like air conditioning, restrooms, and reclining seats. On Bookaway, you can purchase tickets in advance.

GetYourGuide offers day trips to Colonia from Montevideo that include hotel pickup and drop-off as well as a trilingual tour guide to show you around the town of Colonia Del Sacramento if you want to make things more easier. Private tours are also offered from Montevideo.

GetYourGuide is fantastic; we’ve used them for several trips and events all around the world. highly advisable

The best way to get from Buenos Aires to Colonia del Sacramento

Colonia is reachable from Argentina by ferry from Buenos Aires. There are numerous ferry companies to select from, and the harbour is located at Puerto Madero.

Although in my instance I would have been OK with less than one hour, the ferries suggest to be at the harbour 1.5 hours before departure time. It certainly varies by the day.

Although it’s a good idea to reserve your tickets in advance, all of the ferry companies operate daily departures travelling back and forth in the morning and evening, so doing this as a day excursion is not a problem. They do occasionally sell out.

The boat voyage is quick—it only takes approximately 1.5 hours to cruise in either direction—safe, comfortable, and peaceful. On the flight back to Argentina, I even discovered an electrical socket where I could recharge my phone.

The border is relatively open to immigration on both sides. It was quite simple to do this as a day trip as I was a US citizen and didn’t need a visa for Argentina or Uruguay. However, make sure to check the most recent visa regulations for your nationality in these countries and don’t forget to bring your passport!

Best Ferry To Colonia Del Sacramento From Buenos Aires

Buquebus and Colonia Express are the two primary ferry companies that operate out of Buenos Aires.

You can choose whichever company has seats available for your travel dates since they both operate similar schedules to Colonia Del Sacramento and offer similar levels of quality. SeaCat is a third choice, albeit they don’t seem to be as popular.

On Bookaway or GetYourGuide, you may purchase tickets for the Buquebus or the Colonia Express. The latter has the advantage of offering both an optional winery visit and a walking tour with a bilingual tour guide.

It’s also possible to purchase tickets on the ferry companies’ official websites, but these pages are written in Spanish and have numerous bugs, making it actually simpler to use a third party service.

Activities In Uruguay’s Colonia Del Sacramento

The historic district in Colonia Del Sacramento is close to the ferry harbour once you get there, and the neighbourhood is compact enough for you to walk through it all. There is absolutely no need for transportation.

Due to its colonial past, Colonia is a tranquil and lovely town with cobblestone streets, charming old buildings, and a fusion of Portuguese and Spanish cultural influences.

Some of the top attractions in Colonia del Sacramento are listed below:

City Wall and Gate. The stone gate, wooden drawbridge, and defensive wall at the entrance to the historic district, built in 1745 AD, are the first things visitors notice in Colonia. For more views of the waterfront, walk along the wall after climbing up to the top to see an old cannon.

Street of Sadness. With its vibrant old buildings and cobblestone road, this is one of Colonia’s most picturesque streets.
The Blessed Sacrament basilica. An old Catholic church from the 1800s with beautiful architecture, including arched ceilings.

Lighthouse at Colonia del Sacramento. The Convent of San Francisco Javier, a 17th-century chapel, served as the foundation for this lighthouse, which was constructed in 1857. For centuries and still in use today, the light directed sailors to safety. For a small cash fee, you can ascend the tower to get a view of the surrounding area.

Uruguayan Pietra Minerals. Agates, quartz, and amethysts are among the semi-precious stones available in this charming little rock store. Even if you decide not to purchase anything, it’s a great place to browse. Even small rocks were being given away for free to every visitor when I was there by the owner.

Last but not least, Colonia is home to a number of fascinating museums, including a Portuguese Museum and a renowned Origami Art Museum. If you rent a bike, you can even visit some beaches close by!

Duration of Stay in Colonia

The best parts of Colonia Del Sacramento can be seen in a single day trip, though you are welcome to stay longer if you like the relaxed atmosphere of the place.

For several days, there are plenty of lodging options and dining establishments in the area. You could use the extra time to leisurely explore the historic district and all of the museums.

Additional Advice for Colonia Town

What to Wear: Because Uruguay has similar weather and temperatures to Buenos Aires, you can wear summer clothing for the majority of the year.

Where To Stay: Two decent hotel options are Posada del Angel or Posada Boutique Las Terrazas.

Restaurants: Eating places in Colonia tend to be a bit overpriced because of tourism, but the food is good. Check out Charco Bistro or Casa Viera.

Cash: You can usually pay for products with US Dollars or Argentine Pesos, so there’s no need to change money to Uruguayan Pesos, especially on a day trip. Some places even accept Euros or Brazilian Reals. The lone exception is the museums, which have a tiny entrance fee that can only be paid with Uruguayan cash, nothing else. There are several ATMs throughout town if needed.

Credit Cards: Most places in town take credit cards, including restaurants and motels, so this is often the best way to pay for anything. Small souvenir stands may be cash only.

WiFi: The town has decent phone reception and you can find speedy WiFi at many restaurants and hotels. Staying connected is no trouble.

Travel to Poovar Island to experience the true beauty of Kerala’s backwaters, and read on to learn about the best things to do in Poovar Island.

  1. Go to Vizhinjam Harbour.

The Vizhinjam Harbour is a truly remarkable destination, not only because of its natural beauty, but also because of its historical significance as a major seafaring hub. Tourists visit these cave temples not only for their architectural and historical significance, but also to witness the devotion of the many devotees who come to offer prayers on important religious occasions. The Vizhinjam Harbour and its cave temples are not to be missed if you are a history buff or simply looking for an immersive cultural experience.

  1. Take a stroll along Poovar Beach’s coastline.

It is located at the confluence of the Neyyar River and the Arabian Sea and is ideal for picnics and relaxation due to its golden sands and picturesque backwaters. One of the highlights of visiting Poovar Beach is the opportunity to take a boat trip along the backwaters, an experience that is not only exquisite but is also reasonably priced. Poovar Beach, located just 12 kilometres from the popular beach town of Kovalam in Thiruvananthapuram, offers visitors a glimpse into life in a traditional coastal village.

  1. Hike to Tirparappu Falls.

Tirparappu Falls, located approximately 55 kilometres from the southernmost tip of mainland India, Kanyakumari, is a truly enchanting destination that allows visitors to witness the awe-inspiring power of cascading water. Despite the fact that it is a man-made waterfall, it falls from a height of 50 feet, creating a picturesque and tranquil natural setting. The water collects in a charming pool below, which is ideal for visitors, especially children, to frolic in.

  1. Discover Vizhinjam’s local fishing culture.

Fishing is an important part of Vizhinjam’s culture and economy, and the village is home to a large community of traditional fishermen. If you’re looking for cultural activities on Poovar Island, this is the place to go. They catch fish in nearby waters using traditional methods such as catamarans and country boats. The catch is then brought to shore and sold in the village fish market, providing a living for many families. Visitors to Vizhinjam can observe the fishermen’s daily lives and learn about their traditional fishing methods. It is also possible to take a boat trip with local fishermen to observe their work and learn about their way of life.

  1. Visit the Vizhinjam Cave Temple.

It is thought to be the smallest rock-cut shrine in southern India, dating back to the 8th century, and is one of the earliest examples of rock-cut cave temples in Kerala. The shrine features a central cell with an independent sculpture of the Hindu deity Dakshinamurthy, as well as unfinished sculptures of the Hindu deities Siva and Parvathi on either side of the cell. The Archaeological Survey of India, which has been maintaining and preserving the site since 1965, now has control of this rock-cut cave. Visitors to the Vizhinjam Rock-cut cave will be able to see the intricate carvings and unique architectural style of this ancient temple, as well as learn more about the region’s rich cultural heritage, making it one of the most recommended places to visit in Poovar.

6. Stay at Poovar Island Resort.

The resort offers a unique blend of elegance and natural beauty, set on 25 acres of lush green coconut gardens alongside the beach. The resort currently consists of elegant land-based superior rooms built around a natural lily pond swimming pool, and is one of the few places in India where you can find the unique experience of floating cottages and villas afloat on the backwaters and facing the sea. One of the most popular activities on Poovar Island is water sports. The resort is located 30 kilometres from Trivandrum International Airport and is only accessible by a 10-minute boat ride on the river, adding to the resort’s secluded and exclusive atmosphere.

UDUPI’S ANCIENT SHIVA TEMPLES https://blogtweets.com/2023/03/20/udupis-ancient-shiva-temples/ https://blogtweets.com/2023/03/20/udupis-ancient-shiva-temples/#comments Mon, 20 Mar 2023 09:43:25 +0000 https://blogtweets.com/?p=950 Udupi, located on the coast of Karnataka, is well-known for its temples and delectable cuisine....

The post UDUPI’S ANCIENT SHIVA TEMPLES appeared first on .

]]>

Udupi, located on the coast of Karnataka, is well-known for its temples and delectable cuisine. The Sri Krishna Mutt is located in the heart of town. The temple, which was founded in the 13th century by Shri Madhavacharya, is surrounded by eight Mutts and is visited by pilgrims all year. Two other ancient Udupi Shiva temples that often go unnoticed are located on the premises of the same temple.

They are the Anantheshwara and Chandramoulishwara Shaivite temples. Even before the Shri Krishna Mutt was established, the presence of these temples made Udupi a holy land. It is customary to pay them a visit before proceeding to the Shri Krishna temple.

Udupi Shiva Temples

The Temple of Chandramoulishwara
The temples’ history is intertwined with the name Udupi. The name “Udupi” is derived from the Sanskrit term “Udupa”. This literally translates to “Lord of the Stars,” referring to the Moon. According to popular legend, the moon married Daksh Prajapati’s 27 daughters (representing the 27 constellations). While the moon was enjoying Rohini’s company, he ended up ignoring the other 26 wives. Daksh Prajapati cursed the moon, saying that his radiance would fade and he would perish in total obscurity. To atone for this curse, the moon began penance and austerities for Shiva Mahadev.

Shiva was pleased and gave the moon the ability to wax and wane rather than completely disappear. The land where the moon is said to have performed penance is now known as Udupi, and the nearby lake became the Chandrapushkarni. As a result, Shiva is given the title Chandramoulishwara.

The temple compound
The current Chandramoulishwara temple dates from the eighth century CE. The temple is constructed in the traditional Udupi temple style. It has a sloping roof and a cool granite stone floor. This temple is located directly across the street from the Shri Krishna Mutt and shares a wall with the popular eatery Mitra Samaj.

The Nandi here is tilted, and one must tilt their head to see the Shiva ling. This temple is located about 6 feet below ground level, and one must descend a few steps to enter. Despite its elevation, this temple has never been flooded.

This Sphathik (quartz) Lingam is said to change colour three times during the day: black in the morning, blue at noon, and white at night. This lingam is encased in a Mukha (face mask). Even today, before ascending the Paryaya throne, the Paryaya Swamiji visits Chandramouleeshwara temple and then proceeds to receive the darshan of Lord Anantheshwara and Sri Krishna.

The Temple of Anantheshwara
Odipu is the Tullu word for Udupi. This comes from the Sanskrit term “Rajatapithapura” which means, “The city of the silver pedestal”. The name is derived from the ancient silver pedestal on which the Ananteshwara lingam is enshrined. King Ramabhoja, who ruled over this Parasurama-Kshetra, decided to perform Ashwamedha yajna, a ceremony in which the current King is declared to be the greatest of the land.

The yajna Bhoomi was located on the Chandramoulishwara temple’s western side. A snake became entangled in the ploughshare while ploughing the land for the yajna and was instantly killed. The King prayed day and night to atone for Sarpahatya’s sin of killing a snake. Shiva Mahadev praised his penance and instructed him to construct a silver pedestal and a lingam on the yajna Bhoomi.

This temple has since been renamed the Ananteshwara temple. As Tullunadu’s oldest temple, this shrine serves as the spiritual centre for the Shivalli Brahmin community. It is also said that Madhavacharya’s parents prayed to the Ananteshwara deity for 12 years in order to have a child.

The temple compound

The Ananteshwara temple was built in the second century CE. It is constructed by fusing granite slabs with limestone plaster. The temple is notable for its deity, Shiva, who is accompanied by Sheshnaag. As a result, it is revered by both Vaishnavites and Shaivites.

The temple complex of Anantheshwara

The Garbhagriha, also known as the Sanctum Sanctorum, is divided into two sections. One is visible to devotees, while the other is concealed behind the Moolasthana or Altar. On the entry gate, there are also Shankha and Chakra markings. The 40-foot-tall Deepasthamba outside the temple is a one-of-a-kind landmark. As an offering, devotees light this lamp with oil.

The deities of Ganapathi and Parvathi can be seen while circumambulating the temple. Two small but powerful deities, Sheshnaag and Aiyappa Swami, stand in one corner of the temple. The Sheshnag is made entirely of gold.

Mahashivaratri Celebrations at Udupi Shiva Temples
In both temples, a special Rudrabhishekam and Bhilvapatra Archana (the most auspicious way of worshipping Lord Shiva is by performing a ceremony with Bilva leaves) are performed. Instead of fasting on Shivaratri, the Madhavas (the brahmin community that follows Madhavacharya’s teachings and worships Vishnu) feast. They have no reservations about worshipping Shiva. While performing various pujas, they meditate on the Sivapanchakshara mantra and offer upcharas (offerings and services made to a deity as part of worship).

During the festive season, both temples hold a Rathotsava every night. On the final day of Mahashivaratri, a special Rathotsava is held in honour of Ananteshwara. I went to the temple the day after Shivaratri, and it was peaceful. There were few people in the temple, and I felt a strong positive energy surround me.

Like the Shiva Temples of Udupi, four ancient Shiva temples guard the Krishna city of Mathura. These temples are thought to be older than Krishna’s time.

Cuisine and Culture
Udupi is a cultural melting pot of three distinct groups: Kannadigas, Tuluvas, and Konkanis. It is an essential component of Tulunadu as well as the ancient Parshurama kshetra. As a result, the cuisine is a stunning fusion of spices and flavours from all three cultures.

Udupi is also well-known for its ice cream. In Hotel Diana, the well-known “Gudbud” ice cream was invented. Every restaurant in town offers a variety of ice cream sundaes made with the popular Ideal ice creams. They are cooling in the heat and humidity. Since Udupi has long catered to pilgrims, there are restaurants that serve quality North Indian cuisine as well.

When is the best time to visit Udupi’s Shiva temples?

The months of September to February are ideal for visiting Udupi. The heat and humidity can be unbearable in the summer. From June to September, there is a lot of rain. Although the rains can make travel difficult, the monsoon season brings out the lush greenery in and around Udupi. Because Monday is a special day for Shiva, the temples are often crowded.

Transportation and lodging

The nearest airport is in Mangalore, which is 55 kilometres from Udupi. Fly to Mangalore and then take a taxi to Udupi.

If you enjoy train rides, I recommend the Karwar express as well as the Vistadome from Bangalore. This 8-hour train ride will provide you with breathtaking views of the Western Ghats. There are also bus services from Bangalore, Mumbai, Pune, and Mangalore.

Because Udupi has long been a pilgrimage destination, there is no shortage of lodging. You can find guesthouses, Dharamshalas, hotels, and homestays based on your budget. There is a wide selection of delectable vegetarian cuisine.

While the previous year in the travel landscape was about vengeance and revival, 2023 is expected to see tourists delving deeper into these experiences.

As we prepare our year’s bucket lists, industry experts discuss the travel trends that are expected to grow bigger and better.

The year 2022 provided much-needed respite for travelers as the world reopened after a long pandemic-induced hiatus. While the past year in the travel landscape has been about vengeance and revival, 2023 is expected to see tourists delving deeper into these experiences. As we plan our bucket lists for the year, industry experts discuss the travel trends that are expected to grow in size and importance:

Sustainability: The pandemic has prompted a renewed emphasis on environmentally conscious travel. “One of the main criteria for 2023 will be sustainability. “Travelers may be inspired to plan trips that have a low impact on the planet and its resources, as well as book eco-friendly accommodations and use sustainable modes of transportation,” says Elia San Martin, vice president and general manager of APAC at KAYAK. Immersive travel, which involves becoming immersed in a community’s culture and way of life, is also expected to dominate the travel scene.

Workations: Combining work and vacation is another trend that is expected to gain traction in the future, aided by the work-from-home or hybrid models that have been implemented at several workplaces. “There has been an increase in the length of stay of the traveller in the last two years due to the hybrid work model,” says Pallavi Agarwal, founder and CEO of goSTOPS. So, workations are here to stay, allowing people to travel to new places while working.”

Self-care is likely to remain a priority for travelers, making wellness retreats an increasingly appealing option. “This could include yoga and meditation retreats, fitness and nutrition-focused vacations, and spa and relaxation getaways,” says Arun Ashok, regional manager of Luxury Escapes in India and the Middle East.

Immersive travel: The practice of completely immersing oneself in a location’s culture and way of life is expected to continue. “These include volunteering, extensive itineraries, cultural and heritage tours, as well as forms of tourism that focus on experiencing local culture firsthand,” Ashok adds.

Religious travel: Culture and religion have always been major draws for travelers, particularly in India. According to Aditya Gupta, senior vice president, Hotels and Holidays at Yatra.com, this trend will continue in 2023. “India has a rich and diversified tourism potential, and the religious heritage provides a unique tourism opportunity. Various schemes and initiatives launched by the Indian government have enabled travelers to complete their religious bucket lists,” says Gupta. Domestic destinations include Badrinath, Kedarnath, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand, and Shirdi in Maharashtra.

Traveling with your partner: “Post-pandemic, there has been an increase in the couple travel trend as they prefer to indulge in unique experiences. “We anticipate that this trend will continue to grow as people look forward to more once-in-a-lifetime trips,” he adds.

Hidden gems: “People will consider accommodations not only in the heart of the destination, but also in close proximity (within 50 kilometers) of the main destination. When travelling to Darjeeling, for instance, tourists will explore options in Kalimpong, Kurseong and Mirik,” informs Vipul Prakash, COO, MakeMyTrip.

Thematic holidays over traditional itineraries: He also adds, “In the coming year, the concept of romantic holidays will give way to theme-led holidays such as ‘royal a heritage,’ ‘wildlife safari and adventure,’ and more.”

“The year 2023 is all set to see the best of’revenge tourism,’ with people aiming for more adventurous and wilder experiences,” says Sandeep Arora, Head of Brightsun Travel Private Limited.

Weekend getaway: Taking a weekend trip combines the excitement of a vacation with the thrill of a road trip. “In 2022, about 61% of Indian tourists visited nearby weekend getaway spots in just a span of 10 months,” says Sharad K Upadhyay, general manager, Crowne Plaza Greater Noida, adding, “We are going to see a rise in this trend of driving to nearby destinations.”

International trips: “We have seen pre-bookings for international flights that are 30% higher when compared to the last year. “The increase is due to the pent-up demand caused by Covid-19, which has resulted in revenge travel as well as increased travel curiosity,” says Rikant Pittie, co-founder of EaseMyTrip.

    Hike to Angels Landing (Zion)
Angels Landing is the undisputed king of Utah hikes. Make this your one and only hike in the national parks.

It’s an epic and terrifying trail that takes you up the side of a steep sandstone mountain, with chains to grab for safety and incredible views of Zion National Park on all sides. Permits are required beginning in 2022.

The Angels Landing chain section is particularly dangerous, and there have been a number of falling deaths on this hike over the years, though it’s perfectly safe if you stick to the trail.

The Angels Landing trail is not for everyone, but if you enjoy adventure, photography, and a good adrenaline rush, add it to your bucket list!

The final Angels Landing view provides a 360-degree panorama of Zion Canyon, including the tiny roads and shuttle buses below, and you can even see the massive peak you just climbed.

It’s without a doubt one of the best views in Zion National Park, but it’s also one of my favourite views from any hike we’ve ever taken.

At times, the trail will be only a few feet wide, forcing you to hug the mountainside. This section does not have chains throughout, but the most dangerous sections do for your safety.

The most revered Shaktipeetha in all of India is the Kamakhya Temple, located atop Nilanchal Hill. We are aware that there are numerous Shaktipeethas dispersed throughout Bharat, the area between the Himalayas and the three oceans.

    Shaktipeetha Kamakhya

Shaktipeethas returns us to the tale of Sati, the wife of Shiva and the daughter of Daksha Prajapati. She committed suicide during the yagna that her father had planned at Kankhal because she could not tolerate her husband’s insult. Shiva carried Sati’s body on his shoulders as he shattered the yagna in a fit of rage. Vishnu used his Chakra to cut her body in order to calm him down and prevent the end of the world.

Everywhere a piece of her body fell, it became a Shaktipeetha since Shakti had a home there. The Shaktipeethas are listed in a variety of scriptures. They can range in size from 4 to 108. 18 of them are mentioned in a stotra written by Adi Shankracharya. Regardless of the list you use, Kamakhya is always included.

The Yoni or Vagina of Sati fell at this location. We are aware that this is an organ of reproduction, or the area that can give birth to a new life. This makes it the most potent and revered location of all since it symbolises the creative power of Shakti. It seems sense since it has a strong connection to Tantra and fertility.

    ]]>
One of the many art forms present in the culturally diverse country of Braj is sanjhi art.

As a region associated with Lord Krishna, Braj has served as a significant hub for many different folk customs. like music, sculpture, architecture, and the like since antiquity. The clusters of creepers and the Yamuna River bank at his playground, the hallowed area of Braj, instantly come to mind when the folk hero Sri Krishna is spoken. This same sacred playground, which continues to be continually inspired by the lord’s all-pervasive presence, is where the string of artistic and cultural pearls of Braj arose.

However, the numerous elements of art, such as varied genres of music, dance, literature, and visual art, coexist with one another rather than existing independently of one another. These art forms gained popularity during the 16th century CE’s Bhakti movement as people flocked to Braj from all over India. In the rapture of Prema Bhakti, a greater type of Bhakti enveloped in love, it became the focus of Krishna’s pilgrimage. Braj began to host a variety of cultural practises and artistic genres in the sixteenth century. Sanjhi is one such form of art. Its origins can be found in the holy books that discuss Radha and Krishna’s pastimes.

    Describe Sanjhi.

The word “Sanjhi” is derived from the Hindi word “Sandhya,” which denotes dusk, the time of day when cows go back to their herds. It is regarded as the ritual’s most solemn time. The Srimadbhagwatam claims that Radharani herself founded the Sanjhi tradition by making these patterns with the other Gopis. To appease the enraged Krishna, they went to the jungle and collected flowers to arrange in lovely patterns on the ground.

This is the tradition’s spiritual foundation. The play by Sanjhi makes a big deal out of the concept of faked fury. It symbolises the sensitive emotional state connected to the holy couple’s passionate sports. In other terms, it refers to an image depicting a religious theme and is an old folk ritual with a strong Braj regional heritage.
