BRAJ VRINDAVAN HAS SANJHI ART – FOLK ART OF DECORATION
One of the many art forms present in the culturally diverse country of Braj is sanjhi art.
As a region associated with Lord Krishna, Braj has served as a significant hub for many different folk customs. like music, sculpture, architecture, and the like since antiquity. The clusters of creepers and the Yamuna River bank at his playground, the hallowed area of Braj, instantly come to mind when the folk hero Sri Krishna is spoken. This same sacred playground, which continues to be continually inspired by the lord’s all-pervasive presence, is where the string of artistic and cultural pearls of Braj arose.
However, the numerous elements of art, such as varied genres of music, dance, literature, and visual art, coexist with one another rather than existing independently of one another. These art forms gained popularity during the 16th century CE’s Bhakti movement as people flocked to Braj from all over India. In the rapture of Prema Bhakti, a greater type of Bhakti enveloped in love, it became the focus of Krishna’s pilgrimage. Braj began to host a variety of cultural practises and artistic genres in the sixteenth century. Sanjhi is one such form of art. Its origins can be found in the holy books that discuss Radha and Krishna’s pastimes.
Describe Sanjhi.
The word “Sanjhi” is derived from the Hindi word “Sandhya,” which denotes dusk, the time of day when cows go back to their herds. It is regarded as the ritual’s most solemn time. The Srimadbhagwatam claims that Radharani herself founded the Sanjhi tradition by making these patterns with the other Gopis. To appease the enraged Krishna, they went to the jungle and collected flowers to arrange in lovely patterns on the ground.
This is the tradition’s spiritual foundation. The play by Sanjhi makes a big deal out of the concept of faked fury. It symbolises the sensitive emotional state connected to the holy couple’s passionate sports. In other terms, it refers to an image depicting a religious theme and is an old folk ritual with a strong Braj regional heritage.
