A 13-run inning for the Angels was started by B2B2B HRs — on 3 pitches!

In the Angels’ game against the Rockies on Saturday at Coors Field, the third inning included an astounding 13 runs and came off only three pitches. The club homered on three straight pitches for the first time in almost three years, and the 13 runs tied a team record that had been set in both 1978 and 1997.

Opening the period with a solo drive on a 1-0 fastball from right-hander Chase Anderson, superstar Mike Trout then was followed by Brandon Drury, who also launched a single shot on a first-pitch cutter.

The Angels then recorded back-to-back-to-back home runs for the second time this season when Matt Thaiss leaped all over a first-pitch curveball for a dinger.

On April 23, against the Royals, Taylor Ward, Mike Trout, and Shohei Ohtani hit three straight home runs for the Angels. And the Yankees, who ironically also homered on three consecutive pitches from Anderson on September 17, 2020, were the previous team to accomplish the feat in only three pitches.

With his 17th home run of the year and his second in as many days, Trout got things going. Thaiss hit his fourth home run of the year, while Drury connected on his 13th blast of the year.

All three home runs were smashed into the thin Colorado air; Thaiss’ exited the bat at 108.5 mph and travelled a projected 399 feet to the right, Drury’s exited the bat at 105 mph and went a projected 437 feet to left, and Trout’s exited the bat at 110.5 mph and went to centre field, according to Statcast.

The Angels used it as the catalyst for a 13-run inning, and Ward and Ohtani subsequently added RBI singles. With two outs, Trout came up once more, but this time he walked to allow Drury, who had three RBIs in the inning, to hit a two-run single. With two outs, Thaiss also walked to load the bases for Hunter Renfroe, who then outfielded them with a double.

After Mickey Moniak hit a two-run home run to give the Angels a 15-0 advantage, newcomer Eduardo Escobar added an RBI single.

The Angels tied a franchise record with four home runs in one inning on May 28, 2000, in Kansas City, when they also accomplished the feat.

The third inning saw the Angels build up 10 hits and three walks, and it was ended by David Fletcher’s grounded out.
