When do we swear loyalty to the King—or do we not?

There is excitement in the air as the Corrie Naish approaches in less than 24 hours. As preparations are being made for tomorrow’s historic event, royalists have begun to literally camp out along the Mall. If there’s one thing we can bet on, it’s that these guys will unquestionably swear fealty to old Chazza at the ceremony.

The pledge is encouraged but not required for those watching at home or on giant screens across the nation. It will take place at the inaugural ‘Homage of the People’, a new component of the event that will replace the ‘Homage of Peers’, in which a lengthy line of hereditary peers would kneel and make a formal commitment to the queen.

The commitment has drawn a lot of criticism, and it appears that Charles himself may have felt the same way. I can’t think of anything more repulsive than HRH Jonathan Dimbleby would find, said the broadcaster and close friend on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme. He has never sought acclaim. He has never wanted anyone to honour him but in jesting terms.

If that didn’t deter you, then read on for information on pledging allegiance to King Charles.

How do we declare our loyalty to the King?

‘All citizens of good will in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and of the other realms and territories, to make their tribute, in heart and voice, to their indisputable King, defender of all,’ will be the request made by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.

Then it will be time for everyone present in the Abbey and those who are watching at home to respond with the following oath: “I swear that I will pay true allegiance to Your Majesty, and to your heirs and successors according to law.” God, please help me.

Before the Archbishop exclaims, “God save the King,” there will be a fanfare played, and the audience will be urged to sing, “God save King Charles.” King Charles, long live. May the King reign for all time.

What does the word “allegiance” mean?

It is meant to signify the person’s devotion to the new ruler.

The archbishop’s house, Lambeth Palace, announced the new custom in the hopes that it would spark a “great cry of support for the King” throughout the country and the world.

What time will the pledge occur?

When Charles is seated on the Coronation Chair and the Archbishop, Prince William, and Church of England bishops participating in the service have all paid their respects, the Homage of the People will take place.
