Report: A Hindu doctor was assassinated in Karachi, Pakistan
Dr Birbal Genani, a former Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) senior director of health and an eye specialist, was shot dead in Karachi by unknown assailants.
Dr. Birbal Genani, a Pakistani Hindu doctor, was killed on Thursday while returning home from his clinic near Layari in Karachi, according to Dunya News.
Dr Birbal Genani, a former Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) senior director of health and an eye specialist, was shot dead by unknown assailants in Karachi on Thursday, according to Geo News.
According to the police, Dr Birbal Genani and his assistant lady doctor were on their way to Gulshan-e-Iqbal from Ramswamy when they were targeted by unidentified men near the Garden interchange on the Lyari Expressway. Dr. Genani died on the spot, while his assistant lady doctor was shot.
According to Geo News, after receiving information about the incident, police and rescue personnel arrived at the scene and transported the deceased and injured to the hospital. Dr. Genani’s car was seen moving uncontrollably and crashing into a wall on CCTV footage of the incident.
Speaking to reporters, SSP City Arif Aziz described Dr. Genani’s murder as a “target killing,” adding that the exact reason for the murder is unknown. When the unidentified assailants attacked the vehicle, the lady doctor who worked with Dr Genani was inside.
According to the Geo News report, the police officer stated, “Firing started suddenly and I couldn’t understand anything,” and that there was only one bullet mark on the vehicle. The police officer stated that the lady doctor’s statement is being recorded.
According to the officer, an investigation into the murder has begun. Meanwhile, Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori requested a report on the incident from Karachi Police Additional Inspector General. He expressed his grief over the death of the eye specialist.
According to the Pakistan-based The Express Tribune newspaper, Hindu shopkeepers were assaulted last week in Pakistan for allegedly “violating the Ramzan Ordinance” by eating.
In a viral social media video, a police officer can be seen walking around the Ghotki district with a stick in his hands. The police officer thrashed Hindu restaurant owners, including Hindu men who were reportedly preparing biryani for local market delivery orders.
According to The Express Tribune, a man arrested by police stated, “I swear that I belong to the Hindu community, and he is taking away food; we do not run the dining service indoors during Ramzan.”
According to the news report, the SHO publicly forced the Hindu restaurant owner to take an oath on his sacred book. After physically assaulting them, he tortured, harassed, manhandled, and arrested more than a dozen people, including Hindu shopkeepers.
