After the mayhem at the NYC giveaway in Union Square Park, Twitch streamer Kai Cenat was charged with riot

A throng gathered for an event that police claim was not authorised or approved by the city, and Cenat, a well-known YouTube and Twitch celebrity, was detained as a result.

According to officials, a social media influencer has been accused with “inciting to riot” after a giveaway in a New York City park descended into violence on Friday.

According to an NYPD official, Kai Cenat, a live-streamer of video games, had been charged with riot, inciting riot, and unlawful assembly.

They said that he was given a desk appearance ticket, which entails that he must show up in court at a later time.

According to New York City Police Chief Jeffrey Maddrey, thousands of primarily young individuals gathered on Manhattan’s Union Square on Friday afternoon, and Cenat, 21, had been taken from the area for his safety.

According to Maddrey, 65 persons were detained. He said that thirty of them were children.

People tossed bottles, pyrotechnics, rocks, and paint cans that had been taken from a construction site at the park before they were brought into custody, according to Maddrey.

He said that three policemen had been hurt. A sergeant’s hand was fractured.

He said, “Officers were attacked, we were crushed,” and claimed he had been struck by “multiple objects.”

He remarked, “I personally saw young kids experiencing panic attacks, having anxiety attacks. “Out here, people were in pain.”

Cenat stated on his Twitch account on Wednesday that he would hold a “huge” giveaway featuring gaming consoles, computers, keyboards, chairs, and other accessories.

The video has more than 2 million views as of Friday afternoon.

The event was scheduled to start at 4 p.m., but by 3 p.m. the park was already full, according to NBC New York.

Maddrey claimed that the city had neither approved nor disapproved of the event.

Aerial footage from Friday afternoon showed a large crowd assembled in a Manhattan park. People could be seen standing on automobiles in the video, which appeared to show a battle.

Officers in plainclothes and uniform could be seen around the gathering, and at one point a loud bang could be heard.

By 5:30 p.m., people had started to leave the area and police had blocked all of the entrances. Teens in groups were giggling and saying they didn’t worry about their safety.

One 16-year-old, who went by the name Rodrigo, claimed to be a fan of Cenat and had come in hopes of winning cash or even a gaming device.

Then, he continued, “there was a huge storm of people running and there were cops everywhere.”

Two more teenagers claimed they went for the “vibes” and to meet Cenat, whom one of them called the “best person in the world,” but instead witnessed pushing, shoving, people throwing items, and a child who “almost passed out.”

Cenat has been making material for years, but his most popular Twitch streams include games, practical jokes, and funny reactions.

After finishing a 30-day nonstop livestream, colloquially known as a “subathon,” he smashed the Twitch record for most active subscribers in March.

The outlandish actions that Cenat is known for have put him into some issues on the platform.
