Following the removal of the tricolor by pro-Khalistani supporters, the Indian diaspora in the UK staged a protest outside the High Commission in London.
A large crowd of protestors was seen waving Indian flags in videos shared by news agency ANI, a nod to the large outpouring of support from NRIs in Britain against the pro-Khalistani act.
One protestor told ANI that instead of issuing statements, the government and mayor should take action. Another protestor expressed shock and outrage at the ‘insulting’ act, claiming that the community is united in its opposition to flag desecration.
A British police officer was seen grooving along with the diaspora to the song ‘Jai Ho’ from the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ in a separate video.
News organization The PTI also shared videos of protesters criticizing the Khalistani movement. “…will never win because it is a terror-based movement,” said Jayu Shah of Friends of India Society International (FISI), an international non-governmental organization that promotes India.
The tricolor was taken down just days after Punjab Police launched an investigation into radical preacher Amritpal Singh, who is fighting for the establishment of Khalistan, a proposed independent Sikh nation.
Members of the Sikh community demonstrated their support for India on Monday outside the UK mission in Delhi.
Meanwhile, New Delhi’s external affairs ministry summoned the senior-most British diplomat to lodge a protest.
The British High Commissioner, Alex Ellis, called the attack on the Indian High Commission in the UK “disgraceful” in a tweet on Tuesday.
“I condemn today’s disgraceful acts against the people and premises of the High Commission of India – totally unacceptable,” he wrote.
