The actor, whose credits include the science fiction series Fringe and the action thriller White House Down, died of natural causes.

Lance Reddick, best known for his roles on The Wire and in the John Wick franchise, died at the age of 60.

His representative confirmed to multiple outlets that he died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles. The actor had recently completed interviews for his role in John Wick: Chapter 4, which will be released next week. He declined to attend the film’s New York premiere earlier this week.

In HBO’s hit crime drama The Wire, Reddick played Baltimore police lieutenant Cedric Daniels. Initially, he auditioned for the roles of Bubbles and Bunk Moreland. It was a rare prestige show with a predominantly black cast at a time when television was predominantly white. “I didn’t realize that wasn’t the normal experience until I got off The Wire,” Reddick told the Guardian. “In retrospect, I realize it was truly extraordinary.”

In a 2019 interview, he referred to it as “an iconic piece of history” and that he felt “very fortunate and proud of the work we did”.

Reddick’s TV roles also included Oz, Lost, Bosch and a lead role in sci-fi drama Fringe. Before his death, he also filmed the role of Zeus for the upcoming Percy Jackson TV adaptation.

Reddick’s filmography includes White House Down, Sylvie’s Love, Brother to Brother, and a role in the blockbuster John Wick franchise. In addition to his posthumous performance in the fourth film, he is thought to have filmed a role in the spin-off Ballerina, directed by Ana de Armas. In addition, he will appear in the upcoming remake of White Men Can’t Jump.

The creator of The Wire, David Simon, expressed his sorrow in a statement to the Hollywood Reporter. “A consummate professional, devoted collaborator, lovely soul, and friend,” he said. “This is heartbreaking and far too soon for any of us who knew and loved him to contemplate.”

Wendell Pierce, Reddick’s show co-star, paid tribute to him on Twitter. “A man of great strength and grace,” he described himself. “As gifted a musician as he was an actor. The epitome of style. Our artistic family has experienced a sudden, unexpected, and painful loss. Unimaginable agony for his own family and loved ones. Best wishes, my friend. You left your imprint here. RIP”

“Shocked and saddened by the news that Lance Reddick has passed away,” wrote another cast member, Isiah Whitlock Jr. It’s heartbreaking. R.I.P. My acquaintance. You will be sorely missed. “Best wishes.”

“Lance Reddick was an incredibly nice guy, and an incredibly talented actor,” wrote Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. “It’s heartbreaking. My heartfelt condolences go out to all of his family, friends, and collaborators.” Stephen King described him as a “wonderful actor; wonderful man” on Twitter.

His wife, Stephanie, and children, Yvonne Nicole and Christopher, survive him.
