Josh Hubbard breaks Mississippi’s career scoring record in high school basketball
On Friday night, Josh Hubbard of Madison-Ridgeland Academy (Madison) passed Robert Woodard for the most career points in Mississippi high school basketball history. The senior guard led the Patriots to a 55-54 victory over Presbyterian Christian (Hattiesburg) to advance them to the MAIS Class 6A state championship game against Jackson Prep tomorrow night.
Hubbard, rated as a top 100, four-star prospect in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports, is now ranked 20th all-time in high school basketball career scoring by the MaxPreps National High School Basketball Record Book. The previous state high score of 4,274 was set in 1986.
Hubbard has a season average of 27.5 points and 5.7 rebounds, helping the Patriots to a 31-7 record. This season, the Mississippi signee has scored 20 or more points 34 times, 30 or more points 11 times, and a season-high 47 points in a loss to Clinton Christian Academy on December 17.
Hubbard has been a varsity starter since his eighth grade year, averaging 15.3 points as an eighth grader, 18.2 points as a freshman, 24.3 points as a sophomore, and 31.0 points as a junior.
Hubbard broke Ken Coghlan’s 1980 MAIS scoring record of 3,168 points last season. He has also made 101 3-pointers this season, giving him a total of 433 for his career.
Hubbard has been named MAIS Player of the Year three times in his five seasons, winning three state championships on the hardwood and two more as a track and field long jumper.
